Among the different types of ear infections are otitis media, otitis interna (also known as an inner ear infection or labyrinthitis), and otitis externa (also known as an outer ear infection or swimmer's ear). These infections can cause temporary (or, if left untreated, even permanent) hearing loss. Besides ear infections, another condition that can affect hearing is a vestibular schwannoma, which is a benign, slow-growing tumor that can affect one or both ears. In its late stages, a vestibular schwannoma can be life-threatening, as it starts to press against brain structures like the brainstem and the cerebellum.
