Generic Cetraxal

At this time, Cetraxal (ciprofloxacin ear drops) is not available in generic form. The reason for this is unclear, since the exclusivity rights for this drug have expired. It's important to note that ciprofloxacin is the "generic name" for Cetraxal -- it is not the same as a "generic version" of Cetraxal.

Can I Buy Generic Cetraxal?

Cetraxal® (ciprofloxacin ear drops) is a prescription ear drop used to treat bacterial infections of the outer ear or ear canal, known medically as acute otitis externa. This type of ear infection is sometimes called "swimmer's ear."
Cetraxal is made by The Ritedose Corporation for WraSer Pharmaceuticals. It is not yet available in generic form.

When Will Generic Cetraxal Be Available?

The exclusivity rights for this medication expired in May 2012, yet no generic versions are available. At this time, it is unclear why no generic versions are available or when a generic version might be approved.

Is Ciprofloxacin a Generic Cetraxal?

No -- ciprofloxacin is the active ingredient in Cetraxal, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

Is Ciprofloxacin Ophthalmic the Same as Cetraxal?

No -- although ciprofloxacin ophthalmic (Ciloxan®) and Cetraxal contain the same active ingredient (ciprofloxacin), they are not the same. These products contain different dosages of ciprofloxacin, as well as different inactive ingredients. Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic is used to treat eye infections; Cetraxal is used to treat infections in the ear. It should never be used in the eye.
