Generic Cetraxal

At this time, Cetraxal (ciprofloxacin ear drops) is not available in generic form. Cetraxal is protected by exclusivity rights until May 2012. This means that generic versions of this antibiotic cannot be sold until these rights expire, provided there are no other outstanding patents or unresolved lawsuits. Once the exclusivity rights expire, several companies could start making a generic version.

Can I Buy Generic Cetraxal?

Cetraxal® (ciprofloxacin ear drops) is a prescription ear drop used to treat bacterial infections of the outer ear or ear canal, known medically as acute otitis externa. This type of ear infection is sometimes called "swimmer's ear."

Cetraxal is made by The Ritedose Corporation for WraSer Pharmaceuticals. It is protected from generic competition by exclusivity rights that have not yet expired.

When Will Generic Cetraxal Be Available?

WraSer Pharmaceuticals holds the exclusive rights to market Cetraxal in the United States until May 2012. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Cetraxal uses. Once the drug goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Cetraxal drug.

Is Ciprofloxacin a Generic Cetraxal?

No -- ciprofloxacin is the active ingredient in Cetraxal, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
