How Cipro HC Works, Who Can Take It, and Off-Label Indications

How Does Cipro HC Work?

Cipro HC contains a combination of ciprofloxacin and hydrocortisone. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic medication that belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short. Fluoroquinolones interfere with a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase, which is needed by the bacteria to make DNA. Bacteria need to make DNA in order to multiply.

Hydrocortisone belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids. It works to reduce inflammation and suppress the body's natural immune response to infection.

Can Children Use It?

Cipro HC can be used in children as young as one year old. This medication is not approved for use in children younger than one year, as it has not been adequately studied in this age group.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Yes, older adults can use Cipro HC. They appear to respond to and tolerate this medication as well as younger age groups.

Off-Label Uses for Cipro HC

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for something other than outer ear infections. This is referred to as an "off-label" use. Using Cipro HC to treat otitis media (a middle ear infection) would be considered an off-label use.
