Ciprodex Side Effects

Some common side effects to watch for with Ciprodex are ear discomfort, ear pain, and itching of the ear. While most reactions are minor and require little or no treatment, some serious side effects can occur and should be reported immediately. These include severe ear pain that does not improve with Ciprodex use, white patches in the mouth, and difficulty breathing or swallowing.

An Introduction to Ciprodex Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Ciprodex® (ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Ciprodex. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Ciprodex

Ciprodex has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using Ciprodex were carefully documented.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Ciprodex included but were not limited to:
  • Ear discomfort -- in up to 3 percent of people
  • Ear pain -- up to 2.3 percent
  • Itching of the ear -- up to 1.5 percent.

Uncommon Side Effects

Some Ciprodex side effects were reported very rarely in clinical trials. Because they occurred so infrequently, it is difficult to tell if they were due to Ciprodex use or something else (such as the ear infection). Uncommon side effects that occurred in less than 1 percent of people included:
  • Ear residue
  • Irritability (in children)
  • Changes in taste sensation
  • A second ear infection
  • Ear pressure
  • Redness.
