Ciprodex Uses

Ciprodex is prescribed to treat certain bacterial ear infections. Specifically, Ciprodex ear drops are used for treating middle ear infections (otitis media) in children with ear tubes, as well as outer ear infections (otitis externa) in both adults and children. This medication contains both an antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) and a corticosteroid (dexamethasone), and works by killing bacteria and reducing inflammation and other symptoms.

What Is Ciprodex Used For?

Ciprodex® (ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone) is a prescription medication licensed to treat certain bacterial ear infections, including:
  • Infections of the middle ear, medically called acute otitis media, in children with ear tubes
  • Infections of the outer ear, medically called acute otitis externa, or more commonly "swimmer's ear," in both adults and children.

Using Ciprodex for Acute Otitis Media

Otitis media, or a middle ear infection, is the most common type of ear infection. Middle ear infections occur behind the eardrum. The term "acute" means that the infection occurs suddenly, and has a short duration.
Otitis media often begins when infections that cause sore throats, colds, or other respiratory or breathing problems spread to the middle ear. These infections can be due to viruses or bacteria. Usually otitis media is caused by one of the following bacteria:
Ear infections in children can be difficult to detect because most children with symptoms do not yet have sufficient speech and language skills to tell someone what is bothering them. Therefore, some of the first noticeable symptoms may be changes in the child's behavior. Some of the common symptoms of a middle ear infection in a child may include:
  • Tugging at the ears
  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • Problems sleeping
  • Fluid draining from the ear
  • Loss of balance.
If a child has repeated ear infections, or has ear fluid that is causing hearing problems, a healthcare provider may recommend ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes). These tubes are surgically placed into the eardrum, to help drain fluid (see Ear Infection Treatment to learn more about ear tubes and ear infections).
Ciprodex is used to treat acute otitis media due to certain bacteria in children with ear tubes. Specifically, it is licensed to treat otitis media caused by the following bacteria:
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
This medication will not work to treat a viral ear infection.
