Generic Ciprodex

Alcon Laboratories, Inc., holds the exclusive rights to market Ciprodex (ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone) in the United States until August 2020. This is the earliest possible date that a generic Ciprodex product could become available. Although ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone is known as the "generic name" of Ciprodex, it is not a generic version of the drug.

Can I Buy Generic Ciprodex?

Ciprodex® (ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone) is a prescription ear drop used to treat the following conditions:
  • Otitis media (middle ear infections) in children with ear tubes
  • Otitis externa (outer ear infections) in children and adults.

It contains an antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) to treat the infection, and a corticosteroid (dexamethasone) to help reduce swelling caused by the infection.

Ciprodex is made by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Ciprodex from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Alcon holds the exclusive rights to market Ciprodex in the United States until August 2020. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Ciprodex uses. Once the drug goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Ciprodex product.

Is Ciprofloxacin/Dexamethasone a Generic Ciprodex?

No -- ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone are the active ingredients in Ciprodex, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
