Ciprodex Medication Information

Ciprodex® (ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone) is available only by prescription and is approved for treating the following bacterial ear infections:

  • Middle ear infections (called acute otitis media) in children with ear tubes
  • Outer ear infections (called otitis externa, or more commonly "swimmer's ear") in both children and adults.
  •
This drug contains a combination of ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic used to kill the bacteria, and dexamethasone, a corticosteroid used to help reduce inflammation. This ear drop is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and what medications you are taking before prescribing Ciprodex. Possible side effects can include ear discomfort, pain, and itching.

The standard Ciprodex dosage is four drops applied into the infected ear twice daily for seven days. It is important to take your entire course of this medicine, as stopping Ciprodex too soon may cause your infection to return.
