Floxin Otic

A healthcare provider may prescribe Floxin Otic for treating certain bacterial ear infections, such as swimmer's ear and middle ear infections. This antibiotic ear drop works by interfering with bacteria's ability to multiply. It is typically used once or twice a day for 7 to 14 days. Possible side effects may include dizziness, ear pain, and itching in the ear.

What Is Floxin Otic?

Floxin® Otic (ofloxacin otic solution) is a prescription ear drop used to treat the following bacterial ear infections:
 
  • Otitis externa, which is an infection of the ear canal or outer ear, commonly called "swimmer's ear"
  • Acute otitis media, commonly called a middle ear infection, in children with ear tubes
  • Chronic otitis media in people with tympanic membrane (eardrum) holes.

Who Makes This Medication?

Brand-name Floxin Otic was made by Daiichi Sankyo, Inc; however, this manufacturer no longer makes this product. Generic versions are made by several different companies.
 

How Does Floxin Otic Work?

Floxin Otic belongs to a group of medications called fluoroquinolones, or just "quinolones" for short. Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics used to kill bacteria that cause infections. Like other quinolones, Floxin Otic interferes with a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase. This enzyme is needed by the bacteria to make DNA, which is important for the bacteria to multiply.
