Meclizine hydrochloride (Antivert®, Bonine®, Dramamine® Less Drowsy Formula) is an antihistamine medication that can be purchased either over-the-counter or with a prescription. There are several approved uses for meclizine. The non-prescription versions are licensed for preventing and treating motion sickness symptoms, such as:
The prescription versions are approved for the treatment of:
- Motion sickness
- Vertigo (a spinning sensation).
On occasion, a healthcare provider may also recommend this medication for "off-label" uses. Using meclizine to treat nausea and vomiting due to other causes (such as morning sickness) is considered to be an off-label meclizine use (see Meclizine and Pregnancy for more information about using meclizine during pregnancy).
