What Is Meclizine?

Meclizine hydrochloride (Antivert®, Bonine®, Dramamine® Less Drowsy Formula) is a medication approved for treating motion sickness and vertigo. It is available over-the-counter (for motion sickness only) or with a prescription (for motion sickness or vertigo).

Meclizine belongs to a class of drugs known as antihistamines. These drugs work by blocking histamine receptors. Meclizine also probably works to alleviate symptoms of motion sickness by blocking acetylcholine receptors (with its "anticholinergic" activity).

This medication comes in tablet and chewable tablet form and is usually taken by mouth once or twice a day. For the non-prescription versions, there is only one standard recommended dosage for this medication. For prescription meclizine products, the recommended dosage will vary, depending on the medical condition being treated.
