People who have known risk factors for vestibular schwannoma do not always develop the tumor. On the other hand, many who do develop the tumor have none of these risk factors for vestibular schwannoma. While research scientists do not yet know the exact causes of vestibular schwannoma they continue to search for them (see Acoustic Neuroma Gene).
People who think they may be at risk of developing vestibular schwannoma should discuss this concern with their doctor. The doctor may suggest ways to reduce the risk and can plan an appropriate schedule for checkups.
